September 2007: Leslie Stalter
"Nesting"
Paintings and drawings
by Leslie Stalter
Noir Art Emporium is proud to present "Nesting," an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Leslie Stalter of Jacksonville, Ill. Mrs. Stalter earned her M.F.A. in Spatial Arts from San Jose State University in 2003 and is currently Associate Professor of Fine Art at Lincoln Land Community College.
"A little less than two years ago I bought a house. This house was the 25th address I have lived at in 30 years. Growing up my family lived in government housing with standard issue flat white walls that we were not allowed to paint. One of my secret joys in life is the paint area of the hardware store where they let you take home all the color samples you can stuff in your pockets. I have been dissecting the idea of home through art for a while now. I started out with the idea of migration (being a metaphor for all the moves in my life) and fell in love with the software that allows you to see satellite views of the earth. I cruise the globe, visiting places that I have lived and visited and using the satellite view as a departure point. It's the bird's eye view; the view the bird has as it flies from nesting place to nesting place. Each large map is painted with the suggested color combinations for living spaces provided by the paint companies. These large works are the result of the satisfaction that comes with trying out all those color combinations.
"Living in a farming community is new to me. I've experienced almost as much culture shock as moving back to the U.S. was. It's surprising how much of the world is covered in farmland. The maps I have been painting recently have all been derived from maps of farmland. Although a frequent farm resident, the chicken wouldn't fit in with the idea of migration, being flightless fowl. But maybe this bird is nesting right now, and that's what chickens do best, making it the perfect metaphor for the house I just bought, a little less than two years ago."

The exhibition will be on display throughout the month of September. Please see Noir's calendar for upcoming events, parties and live music.
